ATLANTA – Just call 'em showoffs.
Showboating is rarely displayed in any NHL game, but not only is it being encouraged Saturday night, it's required. The NHL is calling the inaugural "Breakaway Challenge" the signature event in its All-Star super skills competition.
Six skaters – three from each conference – will have two attempts to perform a highlight-reel trick while attempting to score against All-Star goalies.
The usual shootout rules are out the window. Shooters can start their routine from anywhere in the offensive zone, skate anywhere they want, including behind the net, before taking a shot.
They will be judged on a 1-to-10 points system by former Atlanta Thrasher Scott Mellanby, actor Taylor Kitsch, broadcaster Bill Clement and – get this – former NBA star and dunk specialist Dominique Wilkins.
