Boston University scores unique own goal against Wisconsin (Video)

Marc-Andre Fleury can totally relate to Boston University goaltender Matt O’Connor today.

As a member of Team Canada’s World Junior side in 2004, Fleury attempted to clear a puck heading toward him only to have it bounce off USA forward Patrick O’Sullivan teammate Braydon Coburn and into his net. The goal would stand as the winner and gave USA the gold medal.

Something similar happened to O’Connor Friday night in a lesser stakes game against Wisconsin, as his clearing attempt bounced off defenseman Brien Diffley:

Matt Ustaski was given credit for the goal.

“It was kind of exciting — it seemed like the hockey gods were on our side for once there,” said Wisconsin goaltender Joel Rumpel, via USCHO. “But it ended up not bearing out that way.”

The goal gave the Badgers a 3-1 lead with 2:41 left in the third period. But the misfortune wouldn’t keep the Terriers down as they rallied, thanks to Ahti Oksanen’s pair in a 1:49 span, including the game-tying tally with 2.2 seconds left.

Nothing would be decided in the five-minute overtime session and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.
