Victor Cruz wants Hakeem Nicks to re-sign with the New York Giants

New York Giants receiver Victor Cruz wants Hakeem Nicks to be his teammate in 2014.

It is hard to understand why.

Nicks is slated to become a free agent in March, and his timing could not be worse. He did not catch one touchdown pass during 15 games in 2013. Nicks had 896 receiving yards, and had less than five receptions in 11 games. He struggled despite facing single coverage throughout the season.

Despite Nicks’ futility, Cruz is optimistic his teammate will re-sign during the offseason.

“I have (asked him to stay),” Cruz told “Selfishly, I would love for him to stay.”

Realistically, it probably will not happen.

As Nicks struggled, second-year receiver Rueben Randle flashed his potential last season. Randle caught at least one touchdown pass in five of six games for New York during the middle of last season. He finished with 41 receptions for 611 yards and six touchdowns.

The Giants could replace Nicks during free agency or the draft.

If Nicks does return, it will likely be on a short-term deal, with little money guaranteed. Nicks, a former first-round draft pick, was expected to become New York’s franchise receiver after he was drafted in 2009, but Cruz currently holds that mantle. Nicks has4,622 receiving yards and 27 touchdowns in his career.

Unfortunately, for Nicks, Cruz does not have the power to influence the Giants’ decision-makers.
