"The Dark Knight Rises," the upcoming Batman movie starring Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway, is filming in Pittsburgh. Adding to the Iron City flavor of Gotham, several Pittsburgh Steelers will appear in the movie as members of the fictional "Gotham Rogues" football team.
Among them were Ben Roethlisberger, Aaron Smith, Troy Polamalu, Hines Ward, James Farrior, Maurkice Pouncey, Heath Miller, Brett Keisel and Ryan Clark.
Here's Aaron Smith on Saturday's filming experience, which took place at Heinz Field:
"You put the uniform on, you sit around a long time, guys with the cameras come and get you and you go on the field and do our little part. [...] Batman was not on site when I was there. Saw a bunch of football guys."
And Ben Roethlisberger:
"I don't think it will be a big part, It's not like we're chasing Batman down or anything. [...] It's something neat that in 10 years or 20 years we can tell our kids we were in a movie."
Here's what the Heinz Field surface looks like at the moment. I guess there's some kind of earthquake in the movie, or the producers just wanted to slightly exaggerate the regular condition of the field in December or January.
It will be something neat to see (not that anyone needed another reason to look forward to Christopher Nolan's 2012 Summer opus), but I'm sure that Roethlisberger's right, and it won't be more than a few seconds of Steelers in the film. Though, if you wanted to, you could argue that you could make a decent movie of Christian Bale chasing Hines Ward around, trying to take his car keys from him.
Here's some YouTube footage of the movie being shot at Heinz Field.
