It won't make up for the thousands and thousands of dollars NFL defensive players have been fined this season, compared to just a few fines for their offensive counterparts, but the league got 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick this week.
Kaepernick was fined $7,875 for a play in the second quarter of San Francisco's loss to Carolina, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. He was being rushed by Panthers linebacker A.J. Klein, and Kaepernick reached out and grabbed Klein's face mask and didn't let go immediately.
Kaepernick lost 14 yards on the play and the penalty was declined, but the league didn't let it slide.
The face mask fine for a quarterback is really unusual, especially considering it's rare to see a quarterback get a face mask penalty at all. And while it's a blip compared to the mountains of fines defensive players have racked up this year, it at least shows that offensive players aren't immune to league discipline.
