Rex Ryan tells New York Jets fans who booed Mark Sanchez to move forward

New York Jets fans booed quarterback Mark Sanchez at Saturday's scrimmage. These things happen, although cornerback Antonio Cromartie did the right thing and came to the defense of his teammate, calling out the booing fans.

Jets coach Rex Ryan knows what it's like to play in the pressure of the New York market, and said during his press conference Monday that the fans have the right to boo.

He just doesn't think it's doing anyone any good.

"Our fans have the right to do anything and I’m not going to say I’m disappointed in our fans, but I think we need to move forward," Ryan said, according to a transcript sent out by the Jets. "The things from the past are in the past, so let’s just focus on what we have in front of us. We’re all going to make mistakes, we’re all going to turn the ball over. We don’t like to, but those are things that are going to happen.

"Sure, would I like for everybody to be, and myself included, I’m hoping to come out and they’re behind me also. I had a bad year also last year, so hopefully, our guys, our fans and everybody else are united 100 percent."

It's kind of hard to move forward when Sanchez's "Buttfumble" is still being replayed on TV and Sanchez is still making many of the same mistakes that drove Jets fans nuts, but Ryan probably has a point. It seems the Jets fans can't wait to unload on Sanchez, if he even can beat out Geno Smith to begin the season as starting quarterback. Ryan said the Jets won't take the fans' vocal opinion into account when they pick a quarterback, but it's also impossible to tune it out.

Ryan at least understood that the worst thing he could possibly do was to tell the fans that they couldn't boo Sanchez or anyone else.

"I like focusing on what’s in front of us and the positives that this football team is going to bring," Ryan said. "Of course we’d like to have a backing with 100 percent of our fans. But, with that being said, our fans can do what they want for the simple fact because they earned that right. They purchase the ticket and they can do whatever they choose."
