Adrian Peterson said Friday he planned to play for the Minnesota Vikings this week, but that was before news broke that his 2-year-old son died due to injuries that doctors determined are consistent with abuse. Joseph Patterson was arrested in connection with the case.
All indications Saturday are that Peterson still plans to play against the Carolina Panthers. ESPN reported that a source close to him expected him to play.
Meanwhile, the Argus Leader reported that Patterson, who was the boyfriend of the mother of the child, was previously charged for assaulting a 3-year-old boy last year.
Here's part of the Argus Leader's report:
"Patterson was indicted on several counts of simple assault involving the woman and her 3-year-old son in June of 2012.
"The woman took out a protection order against him in Lincoln County prior to his arrest, saying he had spanked her 3-year-old so hard for misbehaving in church that he needed ice for welts on his buttocks. When she got angry with him for it, she wrote, he made the children go to their rooms, pulled the shades, grabbed her by the throat and waved his fist in her face."
Peterson tweeted on Saturday morning that another son, Adrian Jr., is doing fine. Some people had tweeted pictures of Adrian Jr. after news of his other son's death broke, and Peterson asked that they stop.
My son Adrian Jr. who lives w/me is healthy. Appreciate the concern. We respectfully ask to stop tweeting his pics.
