So now Brett Favre isn't coming back

Brett Favre(notes) is apparently going to stay retired, and all of this hullabaloo has been for absolutely nothing. According to Yahoo! Sports' Rick Schwartz, Brett Favre will indeed be able to keep his gun from slinging in 2009.

The Minnesota Vikings will not sign free-agent quarterback Brett Favre, a source close to the team told Yahoo! Sports on Thursday.

The source said Favre told Vikings coach Brad Childress that he wanted to remain retired in a phone call that took place sometime in the last day. Favre is expected to publicly explain his decision soon.

Just days after his release from the Jets, speculation began that the Vikings were interested in bringing in a veteran to compete with Sage Rosenfels(notes), who was acquired this offseason from the Houston Texans. Rosenfels is atop the depth chart heading into training camp, with Tarvaris Jackson(notes) and John David Booty(notes) also on the roster.

My goodness, that's infuriating. I feel like I just spent two hours frantically looking for something, running around, screaming, accusing people of stealing it, strip-searching homeless people for it, offering a reward for it, crying, praying and soiling myself over it ... until someone finally says, "Hey, did you check your pockets?" And there it is.

All the hand-wringing and gnashing of teeth for nothing. I just wonder how things like this get started. Was Favre actually thinking about coming back, but changed his mind? Did someone just make something up, and the media ran with it? How? How did all this get started?

The stories about how Favre really wanted to stick it to the Packers, and how he and Brad Childress were going to talk, about how Favre was open to having surgery on him arm ... where do these things come from? Was there any truth to any of them? How did I get to the point where I feel like Brett Favre and Bus Cook are the good guys, and I'm the jerk? If you're an "NFL source," or a "source close the situation," and you lied about Favre's interest in coming back, I want you to know that I hate you.

I'm looking forward to Favre's public explanation. I still have no idea if I'll be able to believe a word of it, but some kind of explanation from someone will be nice.
