One day after adding an elite defensive player, the New England Patriots had another elite defensive player ask for his release.
Vince WIlfork, a huge defensive tackle and an enormous part of the Patriots' incredible run of success over his 10 seasons, has asked that the team release him according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Getting cornerback Darrelle Revis on Wednesday was huge, but so is Wilfork's request if the sides can't reconcile.
The Patriots don't have to grant that request, of course. There have been reports that the Patriots wanted Wilfork, coming off a season-ending Achilles tendon injury and due $7.5 million in base salary. Wilfork apparently has no interest in that.
This is a dilemma for the Patriots. They have to determine if they could adequately replace Wilfork, a five-time Pro Bowler, if they move on, or figure out a way to make the lynchpin of their defense happy. The Patriots could figure that the 32-year-old Wilfork won't rebound that well off a serious injury and move on.
One thing is certain: The excitement of getting Revis would be tempered a bit by losing Wilfork and all he has meant to the Patriots defense.
