The Washington Redskins were anxious about Robert Griffin III, but not panicked. Because, even if Griffin had a setback, they always had Kirk Cousins to turn to.
Well, that security blanket might be gone, at least for a bit.
Cousins was running outside of the pocket when Steelers linebacker Lawrence Timmons tackled Cousins and landed on his foot. The Redskins' backup quarterback tried walking back to the huddle, but was in pain and went down. He was taken out of the game. ESPN reported during the broadcast after talking to Redskins coach Mike Shanahan that X-rays on Cousins' foot were negative, and he has a mid-foot sprain.
The severity of Cousins' sprain isn't known yet, and even though it might turn out to be very minor it will surely be a situation worth watching, because even though everything looks good for Griffin returning by Week 1, he's not in the clear yet.
(UPDATE: Cousins should be OK, the Redskins reported on Tuesday that there was no ligament damage and he'll likely be ready for Week 1.)
The most likely scenario is that Griffin plays Week 1. All signs have pointed to that. He ran a dead sprint after doing some football-related work before Washington's game against Pittsburgh, and looked fast. Although there was a report from Philadelphia-based TV and radio personality Howard Eskin that Dr. James Andrews had recommended Griffin not play until after the Week 5 bye, that was quickly refuted and ESPN said that Andrews and the team wouldn't make any decisions about Griffin until after the last preseason game.
All that says is Griffin probably should play Week 1, but it's not a lock quite yet. That's why there should be some concern about Cousins' foot.
If Griffin isn't ready by the opener and Cousins is out too, the Redskins' next option is Rex Grossman. That's not going to make anyone in Washington sleep better.
So now instead of worrying about one quarterback's health and when he can return, Redskins fans need to worry about two of them.
