It's barely August, and the New York Jets fans are already booing Mark Sanchez.
And, in turn, Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie is getting on the fans.
Sanchez drew boos at the team's intrasquad scrimmage when he threw an interception to Cromartie. Earlier, Sanchez tripped on his own feet coming out from under center and was sacked.
There aren't too many teams that you'd expect to get booed at an intrasquad scrimmage, but the Jets are on the short list. Even though they weren't happy with the beleaguered Sanchez, Cromartie thought it was out of line.
“I think that’s bullcrap,” Cromartie said, according to the New York Daily News. “My thing is, if you’re going to be a fan, be a fan. You don’t come out here and boo anybody.”
Sanchez seems used to the fan reaction (“Oh, shoot, I don’t care,” he told the Daily News. “That’s the way it goes.") but the bigger issue for him is he's fighting for a job.
The Daily News said rookie Geno Smith played better for most of the scrimmage, but Sanchez finished with a 57-yard touchdown to Stephen Hill. The Daily News said Sanchez was 6-of-11 for 93 yards (most of which came on one pass to Hill), a touchdown, an interception and two sacks. Smith was 9-for-16, 77 yards and took one sack.
The competition will go through the preseason, but the Jets fans are already letting everyone know that they want someone to step up and play well at that position.
