New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie calls Jets reporter Manish Mehta a dope and an idiot

Well, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie probably lost himself a voter.

Appearing on WFAN Radio in New York, Christie ripped Manish Mehta, a Jets reporter for the New York Daily News, calling Mehta a dope and an idiot for asking Ryan about Geno Smith's chances of starting Week 1, which is a pretty standard line of questioning after a third preseason game.

Ripping a reporter for that doesn't seem very gubernatorial. Here's what Christie said, via The Big Lead and Bob's Blitz:

“Idiot. The guy’s a complete idiot," Christie said. "Self-consumed, underpaid, reporter … the only way he’s empowered is because we’re spending all this time talking about Manish Mehta this morning … Who, by the way, I couldn’t pick out of a lineup and no Jets fan gives a damn about Manish Mehta … We shouldn’t be giving this dope, you know, the amount of airtime we’ve given him already.”

Mehta's biggest crime seems to be being critical of Ryan, who is obviously on the hot seat but is also friends with Christie. Christie says that Mehta should be known simply as "The Dope," and at that point it's worth asking: Doesn't the governor of New Jersey have anything better to do with his time than go on the radio and act like an outlandish caller to a sports talk show?
