EA Sports let fans vote on the NFL superstar who would appear on the cover of their Madden '11 video game, with the choices being Drew Brees(notes), Jared Allen(notes) and Reggie Wayne(notes). Guess who won?
If you figured it out from the subtle hints in the headline and the picture, congratulations. Honestly, though, it was Brees all along. After he won the Super Bowl and captured the hearts of America, Allen and Wayne had as much chance of winning that vote as Ben Roethlisberger(notes) has of winning Time's Man of the Year award.
Brees even had Oprah's full endorsement. There was just no way he was losing.
Some Saints fans may consider this bad news, due to the Madden Curse, a mythology dictating that whoever appears on the cover will suffer a major injury and/or a severe decline in production.
Myself, I don't believe in the Madden Curse because I'm an adult. The theory's out there, though, and it's taken on a life of its own. If you're a Saints fan and you believe in the Madden Curse, go ahead and sell your Brees jersey, start a campaign for the Saints to cut him, and then bet against him every week. See how that works out for you.
In other Madden news, they released some screenshots of the game, which, naturally, look fantastic. Brees's face (birthmark included, whether Oprah likes it or not) is about the most accurate looking video game face I've ever seen. EA is promoting the game itself as being "Simpler, Quicker, Deeper," which you can read more about here.
