Controversial penalty on missed field goal gives Jets second life, they beat Patriots in overtime

Jets coach Rex Ryan sent out Nick Folk for a questionable 56-yard field goal in overtime, and Folk missed as expected. The Patriots were set to take over near midfield and have a great chance to win.

But the referees had other thoughts.

Patriots rookie defensive tackle Chris Jones was flagged for a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty. He was called for pushing his teammate from behind. CBS showed the replay a few times, and it didn't seem like Jones deserved a penalty, on first glance. But it decided the game.

Given a second chance and 15 extra yards, the Jets moved a little closer and Folk came on to kick the game-winning field goal. That gave the Jets a 30-27 win over the 5-1 Patriots. The Jets are now 4-3. It was a huge win in the AFC East race.

What made the call seem unusual is it's a new rule and this was the first time it was enforced, according to former NFL vice president of officiating Mike Pereira.

So there was some history made in the Jets win. Jones and the Patriots won't remember it fondly.
