Buffalo Bills quarterback Kevin Kolb will get the start in Friday night's preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings, head coach Doug Marrone announced.

"Just to give everybody a heads up, I talked to the quarterbacks today after the walk-through and we’re going to go ahead and start Kevin Kolb at quarterback this week," Marrone said. "Just the one thing I hope everyone understands is not to read in to this because we were very, very happy with E.J. (Manuel)’s performance in the first game. Matter of fact, what we were looking at is probably if Kevin was healthy he was probably going to start the first game and EJ start this game.

"Again, they’re in a competition and we just switched it."

Kolb missed practice time the previous week after injuring his knee when he slipped on a rubber mat while walking onto the team's practice field. Kolb also missed time to attend a funeral. With Kolb out, Manuel played the entire first half against the Indianapolis Colts, completing 16-of-21 pass attempts for 107 yards and threaded a 17-yard touchdown to tight end Dorin Dickerson to cap off an impressive two-minute drill.

Manuel added 28 rushing yards before giving way to undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel for the remainder of the game.

According to Marrone, Kolb hasn't shown any rust in practice this week, an assessment that Kolb agreed with.

"Obviously yesterday was a big improvement for me," Kolb said. "I felt my feet get back underneath me. I was able to push the ball down the field a couple of times. I was happy with it.

"I think once you’ve missed time, you can never get that time back. You’re always going to be missing out on something or lose something. It was difficult coming back after missing those five days and getting back in the groove of things, but like I said, yesterday was a good day for me mentally and physically. I’m putting that week behind me and moving forward."

The Bills' quarterback battle is about even right now, but Kolb entered training camp as the favorite and could edge back ahead with a good showing against the Vikings on Friday night.
