The Doc has seen a lot of great plays this year, and just a few weeks ago we declared a catch by Marshall's Aaron Dobson the best of the season.
However, after watching Montana State receiver Elvis Akpla make a one-handed grab against Montana State in the Football Championship Subdivision quarterfinals, we might have to rethink our declaration.
It's hard to describe Akpla's grab. It's an amalgamation of Nelson Rosario's catch against Houston, David Tyree's infamous Super Bowl catch and even a little of Dobson's backhanding ways. It's a pretty sick display of athleticism and concentration because while Akpla is making the catch, a Sam Houston State defender is also smothering him.
While this is a great grab, it's hard to vote this one over Dobson's catch for the grab of the year simply because Dobson's catch was a touchdown and it helped secure a bowl berth for Marshall. Akpla's play was made in the middle of the field early in a 49-13 playoff loss.
Still, it's a beautiful thing to watch.
