Tulane RB Robert Kelley charged with robbery and battery

Tulane RB Robert Kelley is facing felony charges of simple robbery and simple battery after he allegedly punched and beat a Tulane student and took his bicycle.

The incident happened July 30 when the alleged victim told police he was approached by a group of football players, including Kelley, and his bike was taken and he was placed in a portable toilet.

When he got out, he told police he was followed by Kelley.

From WWLTV.com:

After retrieving his bike and leaving the area, the victim reported that Kelley
followed him.

“Mr. Kelley became angry and punched (the victim) in his right abdomen area,” Detective Sgt. Scott Meunier wrote. “(The victim) advised that he fell to the ground in pain and Mr. Kelley jumped on top of him and began to beat him.”

The victim reported suffering from scrapes, abrasions and ripped clothing.

The victim then tried to get his bike again later that night, but Kelley prevented him from doing so. Police said Kelley admitted to takeing the bicycle and hanging up the phone when the alleged victim called to get his bike back.

Kelley's lawyer said there was no attempt by Kelley to harm or rob the alleged victim. He was booked on August 4 and released on bond.

Kelley, a senior, has been absent from the team since the spring due to what coach Curtis Johnson said were academic issues. On Saturday, Johnson said the team was "moving on" without him. Monday, the school issued a statement that said Kelley has been suspended from the team.

"Robert Kelley, a senior from New Orleans, has been suspended from the Tulane University football team. Federal law prohibits the university from disclosing any disciplinary action taken against a student regarding his or her enrollment in the university."

Had he been with the team, Kelley could have been a key contributor this season. Last year he had 98 carries for 420 yards and three touchdowns. In his career he has 253 carries for 1,038 yards and five touchdowns.
