Tennessee bombards recruit with 102 recruiting letters in one day

Tennessee is the latest school to go on a mailing binge.

After teams such as Alabama and Ole Miss were cited as having sent recruits letters in bulk, the Vols, behind new coach Butch Jones, pulled a similar stunt with Stanton Truitt, an athlete from Monroe, Ga.

"When I went to open [the mailbox], it would not budge," Truitt told ESPN.com. "I pulled it down, and then some of the letters were hanging out, but they were all tied together by a rubber band.

"I was thinking there was no way these came from the same school," he said. "But I kept pulling on them and I thought the mailbox was going to break, but when I got them out I found out that all 102 of them were from Tennessee! It was crazy."

Apparently, Tennessee wanted to get in one last mass mailing before the NCAA suspended the ability for teams to do so.

The 102 letters, which was just short of the 105 Alabama sent Alvin Kamara last year. Kamara ended up going to Alabama, but Tennessee might have a little more of a fight with Stanton, who has already received 18 offers from across the country.

But Tennessee’s mailing stunt did leave an impression on Stanton, who doesn’t have a favorite, but appears to be leaning toward the Vols simply because they’re showing him the most attention.

"It was shocking and it shows me that they think highly of me and really love me," Truitt said. "It makes me feel important to them and makes me want to work harder and keep doing what I have been doing."

Truitt said that the letters were inspirational, and each letter would say something different like "Stanton, we love you," or "Vol Nation."

"The Tennessee staff had been telling me that everything we do, we are always going to do it plus-two," Truitt said. "Every play you run, you want to get plus-two yards, take an extra two yards with the end zone. Everything you do, do it plus-two. That is why they sent me 102 letters."
