One day after Mack Brown’s final game as Texas head coach, new Longhorns athletic director Steve Patterson is already interviewing candidates to replace Brown.
According to a report from Chip Brown of Orangebloods.com, Patterson “flew to an undisclosed location” to interview Louisville coach Charlie Strong on Tuesday after Strong received a high recommendation from the search firm employed to help hire a new coach.
Brown’s report, citing multiple sources, also claimed that Patterson has already interviewed Vanderbilt coach James Franklin and wants to talk to Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio. Additionally, the report states that Patterson spoke to a group of Texas lettermen “who expressed support for Baylor coach Art Briles.”
On top of that, Brown’s report also states that a group of “billionaire donors” will make their case for Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher and another billionaire “let it be known he supports Jon Gruden” as the next coach.
Other names mentioned in the report include Will Muschamp, Mark Richt and Greg Schiano.
Patterson told reporters before the Alamo Bowl that he’d like to have a hire in place by January 15 – the end of the recruiting dead period.
It looks like he has plenty of candidates to sort through.
