Report: Former USC QB Max Wittek might join Hawaii as walk-on
It was announced in January that quarterback Max Wittek would transfer from USC. Nearly six months later, Wittek may have finally found a landing spot, but not under the circumstances he originally hoped.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser is reporting there is a “good possibility” that Wittek will join the University of Hawaii as a walk-on.
Wittek originally hoped to utilize the NCAA graduate transfer rule and play his final two years of eligibility at another school with immediate eligibility. After multiple visits, it appeared Texas would be Wittek’s landing spot. That all changed when a delay in his graduation from USC derailed those plans.
Since he won’t be a graduate transfer, he’d have to sit out a year at Hawaii before being eligible as a redshirt senior in 2015. Wittek told the Star-Advertiser that he has developed a “good relationship” with Hawaii head coach Norm Chow.
“I feel great with coach Chow,” Wittek said. “He’s awesome. He’s been so helpful through this whole process.”
Wittek entered the 2013 season in a competition with Cody Kessler to be USC’s starter at quarterback, but Kessler eventually emerged as the team’s top quarterback. For the season, Wittek completed 14-of-26 passes for 212 yards and an interception.
In 2012, Wittek complted 36-of-59 passes for 388 yards with three touchdowns and five interceptions. He started the Trojans’ season finale and bowl game against Georgia Tech after Matt Barkley went down with an injury.
Wittek was rated as a four-star prospect and the third-best pro-style quarterback in the 2011 class by Rivals. He enrolled early at USC alongside Kessler, who was rated the nation’s second-ranked pro-style quarterback that year.
