Quarterback Michael Brewer transferring from Texas Tech, will be immediately eligible in 2014

Three quarterbacks took snaps for Texas Tech in 2013. Only one of them will be on the roster in 2014.

Redshirt sophomore Michael Brewer announced his intention to transfer on Wednesday. He's on schedule to graduate in May, so per NCAA rules, he'll be immediately eligible to play in 2014.

Brewer was the favorite for the starting job throughout the summer, but a back injury before the season began opened up the quarterback competition. Freshman walk-on Baker Mayfield won the job over freshman Davis Webb and started the first five games of the season before getting injured against Kansas.

With the emergence of Webb and Mayfield and the injury, Brewer hardly saw the field. He finished the season 7-10 for 65 yards passing and a touchdown.

Mayfield announced his decision to transfer from Texas Tech in December. He enrolled at Oklahoma and appealed to Texas Tech to be immediately eligible at OU because of his walk-on status at Tech. However, his appeal Friday was denied, so if he wants to play at Oklahoma he must sit out a year and lose a season of eligibility.

The transfers leave Webb, the only scholarship QB on the roster this spring, as the clear favorite for the starting job in 2014. Though it's a position he likely would have been in anyway. After not playing against Baylor and Texas in Tech's last two games of the season, Webb played exceptionally well in the Red Raiders' win over Arizona State in the Holiday Bowl. He was 28-41 passing for 403 yards and four touchdowns.
