Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio called recruits from midfield at the Rose Bowl

Things are good in the world of Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio. A 13-1 record, a Big Ten title and Rose Bowl victory will do that.

The 24-20 Rose Bowl triumph over Stanford was still fresh on his mind when he spoke at the Michigan High School Football Coaches’ Association clinic Friday. The recent run of success helps the program in a number of ways – especially recruiting.

In fact, according to the Detroit Free Press, when Dantonio was out in Pasadena for the Rose Bowl, he chatted with recruits on the phone while standing at midfield, saying: “We’re at the Rose Bowl – come on, let’s go.”

Dantonio has just a few spots left for his 2014 class of recruits, so Dantonio said he and his staff are looking ahead to the 2015 class and beyond.

“I think there is (a big impact), especially with younger players,” Dantonio said. “Recruiting is so accelerated; you sort of have your (2014) guys sort of set in place. But we still have a couple we’re recruiting and you feel that surge, I guess you’d say.”

With New Jersey defensive end Darius Slade flipping from Nebraska to MSU Friday, the Spartans currently have 20 verbal commitments and the nation’s 32nd-ranked class according to Rivals.

Dantonio’s team will likely be ranked in the Top 10 to start the 2014 season. We have the Spartans at No. 6. I bet that makes him feel some type of way.
