Maryland captains refuse to shake hands with Penn State's captains (GIFs)

Maryland picked up a penalty against Penn State before the game even started.

ESPN’s broadcast showed a handful of Maryland players jawing at the Penn State players on the field prior to kickoff where some shoves were exchanged.

Then, when it was time for the coin toss, Penn State’s captains went to shake hands with the Terps’ captains. They refused and it resulted in a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

The 15-yard penalty against Maryland was assessed on the opening kickoff, which gave Penn State solid field position for its first drive that culminated in a field goal.

Now that Maryland is in the Big Ten, it is looking to establish a rivalry with the Nittany Lions. The animosity shown pregame certainly can’t hurt that effort.

After the game, which Maryland won 20-19, Terps head coach Randy Edsall apologized for the display.

"That's not the way we want our kids to be," Edsall said. "I want to apologize. That was not orchestrated or choreographed."
