An Iowa State signee accidentally shot himself in the hand earlier this week.

According to the Des Moines Register, Sheldon Croney, a running back from Bakersfield, California, was treated for an accidental gunshot wound to his left hand on Tuesday morning.

The Bakersfield Police Department said in a release that Croney and a juvenile friend were at another friend’s house when they found a handgun.

From the Register:

According to the release, the gun belonged to the other friend’s father. Croney manipulated the firearm, causing it to fire, striking him in the left hand. His friend then took Croney to the residence on Cathedral Rose Dr. where police and medical aid were dispatched.

Bakersfield Police sergeant Joe Grubbs said that there were no other injuries in the incident and no charges were being filed.

“It’s pretty much opened and closed,” Grubbs said.

Croney, a Rivals three-star recruit, rushed for 2,271 yards and 32 touchdowns as a high school senior. Per the Register, Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads said during spring practice that Croney would have a chance to contribute as a true freshman.
