Iowa State forgets to receive kickoff, Oklahoma State recovers (GIFs)

Oklahoma State was struggling early on in its home game against 1-3 Iowa State on Saturday afternoon, but an unusual blunder by the Cyclones allowed the Cowboys to take the lead late in the first half.

After tying the score 6-6 on a 30-yard Ben Grogan field goal with 1:47 left in the second quarter, Oklahoma State kicked off to the Cyclones. The kickoff was high and short, but instead of fielding the kick, the ball landed around the 25-yard line in between ISU’s two return men.

Once the ball goes ten yards, it is live for any player to pounce on. As the ball bounced past the two Cyclones, Oklahoma State’s Elliott Jeffcoat did just that and gave his team awesome field position at ISU’s 11-yard line. Five plays later, the Cowboys found the end zone on a Desmond Roland two-yard touchdown run to take a 13-6 lead going into halftime.

Iowa State’s special teams unit failed again at the start of the third quarter when OSU’s Tyreek Hill brought back the opening kickoff 97 yards for a score. It took 56 seconds of game time for the Cowboys to take a 14-point lead after initially tying the score at six.

Iowa State just couldn’t get out of its own way and eventually lost 37-20.
