Indiana beats No. 18 Missouri on last-minute touchdown run

Indiana beat a ranked opponent for the first time since 2006, and it did so in the final minute of a 31-27 road win over Missouri.

Senior running back D’Angelo Roberts registered the game-winning score for the Hoosiers on a diving 3-yard run with just 22 seconds to go. The score was the culmination of an impressive six-play, 75-yard response after Missouri took a 3-point lead with 2:20 to play.

The Hoosiers racked up 493 yards of total offense and ended a streak of 47 consecutive games where the Mizzou defense caused a turnover. Junior Nate Sudfeld was solid for IU, throwing for 252 yards and a score, but the Hoosiers' ground attack was the story. A three-pronged attack of Roberts, Tevin Coleman and Devine Redding combined for 246 yards on 44 carries. Coleman led the way with 132 yards and his 44-yard catch-and-run on a swing pass from Sudfeld set up Indiana’s winning score.

Maty Mauk threw for 334 yards and two scores for the Tigers, while running back Russell Hansbrough added 119 yards on just ten carries. With 12 catches for 153 yards, Bud Sasser was Mauk’s favorite target.

The two teams were fairly even for much of the ballgame and things were tied at 17 at halftime. Indiana scored late in the third quarter on a J-Shun Harris II touchdown catch late in the third, but the Tigers quickly tied things up again three minutes later when Mauk hit Sean Culkin on a one-yard pass.

After a series of punts, Mizzou regained possession with 6:34 to go. Mauk led the Tigers down into the red zone, but the Hoosiers’ defense forced a 40-yard Andrew Baggett field goal to give Mizzou a 27-24 lead.

When Indiana took over on offense, it quickly faced a fourth-and-6, but were bailed out by a Missouri pass-interference penalty. Sudfeld hit Coleman for 44 yards on the next play, leading to Roberts' game-winning TD run and the upset over the defending SEC East champions.

Following a rough loss to Bowling Green, the Indiana win elevated its record to 2-1. Additionally, the win is an unexpected boon for the Big Ten in what has been an encouraging weekend for the downtrodden conference. Indiana’s win, coupled with Iowa’s win over Pitt and Maryland’s win over Syracuse gives the conference three of its four wins over Power Five teams this season.

For Mizzou, this one stings. Coming off a dominant win over UCF, the Tigers (3-1) were set to start 4-0 heading into the SEC schedule. Things will only get more difficult from here on out.
