The Hot Seat: The combined win total of Akron and Miami (OH) will double Saturday

Welcome to The Hot Seat, where each week we will preview a game that could make a coach's season or maybe end his tenure. Up now? Some cold MACtion.

Miami (OH) became the third team in FBS to get rid of its coach this season when it fired Don Treadwell after starting 0-5. In its first game after Treadwell's dismissal, Miami lost to UMass 17-10. That was UMass's first win of the year.

1-6 Akron's highlight of the season is well, losing to Michigan. But not before almost beating them. That's why it's the highlight. Sure, you could say it's the win over James Madison, but is a two-point win over James Madison really bigger than almost beating Michigan at the Big House? We'll let you ponder that.

Miami interim coach Mike Bath has been with the team for 10 years as a player and a coach. If there was ever a Miami guy to resuscitate the program, he's it. However, a winless season isn't necessarily the best way to earn a job, no matter if it's at your alma mater or not.

Akron has not beaten a FBS team since the last game of 2010 when it defeated Buffalo. Outside of James Madison, its wins since then have included VMI and Morgan State. That's it. Don't ponder that. It'll make you depressed.

Terry Bowden has been at the helm of Akron since the beginning of 2012, so he can just boast about Morgan State and JMU. A win over Miami would not only be a win to brag about (baby steps, please) but one that could potentially save his job. Bowden was brought in to not do what was done in 2011. A loss to Miami puts him on track to repeat that two years in a row.
