South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw, who is the Gamecocks all-time winningest quarterback, spent several hours last Friday and Saturday signing autographs for fans at a mall sports memorabilia shop.
However, not every fan in the line, which was several hundred people long, was a South Carolina fan and Shaw was handed an interesting item – a Clemson helmet.
Shaw took it in stride and signed the bright orange lid: “This Is Our State! 5″ above his signature.
Somewhere Steve Spurrier shed a single tear of pride.
It was Shaw’s first professional autograph appearance since ending his collegiate career with a 34-24 victory over Wisconsin in the Capital One Bowl on New Year's Day.
And he was admittedly a little nervous.
"I've played in front of 100,000 people and not been nervous but I'm getting nervous about this," Shaw told The Post and Courier. "This is my first time in Charleston and to be with my Gamecock family here is really exciting. I'm a converted Carolinian. I grew up in Georgia but this is my home."
Shaw was 26-5 as a starter and 17-0 at home.
