Tulane kicker Cairo Santos has taken a leave of absence from the team after his father was killed in an airplane crash in Brazil two days ago.
Cairo Santos Sr., an airplane pilot who performed stunts in airshows, died due to a crash while performing.
Santos returned to his native Brazil for Tuesday’s funeral. Tulane coach Curtis Johnson said he wasn’t sure whether Santos would be back for Saturday’s game against Syracuse.
Santos is the 2012 Lou Groza Award winner. He’s made 82 percent of his field goals during his three seasons with the Green Wave and has made 25 consecutive field goals in the past two seasons, which ranks second all-time in the FBS.
