East Carolina DL Terrell Stanley will miss the 2014 season to continue his rehabilitation from injuries sustained in a car crash.
In February, Stanley was injured in a single-car accident on his way to campus from his residence. His car slid down an embankment and crashed into trees. He was given a seatbelt citation after the crash and charged with failing to maintain lane control. Fellow ECU football player Isaac Harris was in the car with Stanley, but he suffered minor injuries.
"Terrell has come a long way and we admire his determination to return to battle, but he's not ready to be in a position to fairly compete at the level he needs to be," East Carolina coach Ruffin McNeill said in a statement. "His full recovery and health are our first priority, as it would be with any of our players. We're looking forward to him getting back to full strength and joining us in the spring."
Stanley started 12 games for East Carolina in 2013 and had 46 tackles and seven sacks. He was an honorable mention all-Conference-USA selection as a redshirt sophomore.
Since Stanley redshirted in 2011, McNeill said that the team would be open to helping Stanley look for a sixth year of elgibility after 2015 if he wanted to pursue a medical redshirt for 2014.
