New Central Michigan head coach John Bonamego has been diagnosed with cancer in his left tonsil.

Bonamego announced that he informed his team and coaching staff on Thursday morning and said the cancer was “discovered early and is very treatable.”

In a statement addressed to CMU faculty, staff, students, alumni, fans and friends, Bonamego said he will continue to coach while he undergoes treatment.

“As I told our team, I WILL beat this. It was discovered early and is very treatable,” Bonamego said. “An excellent team of doctors here in Mount Pleasant and in Ann Arbor are overseeing my care. While a diagnosis like this is always scary, I am blessed to have the love and support of my family and those around me — including all of you. I know I will never be alone and for that I am very thankful.”

Bonamego, a Central Michigan alum, was hired in February after coaching special teams in the NFL since 1999. He replaced Dan Enos, who left in January to become the offensive coordinator at Arkansas.
