Big Ten Network is holding a 'selfie contest' in New York and New Jersey

In conjunction with the Big Ten’s effort to extend its footprint to the east coast, the conference will officially welcome Rutgers and Maryland to the conference on July 1. Additionally, the conference recently opened up an office right in New York City.

The next logical step to stir up some B1G excitement in the New York tri-state area was to conduct a selfie contest, so the Big Ten Network has done just that.

BTN, which announced the selfie contest on Tuesday, wants “Big Ten superfans” to take creative selfies in front of “iconic New York and New Jersey locations.” The participants who submit the best selfies can win a bevy of cool prizes, including trips to the 2014 Big Ten Championship Game in Indianapolis or the 2015 Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament in Chicago.

Other prizes include a 50-inch flat-screen television and a football or basketball signed by your favorite Big Ten head coach.

You can’t just go take a selfie in front of the Empire State Building and expect to win. Your selfie will be judged on “expression of Big Ten pride (50%), showcasing iconic NYC/NJ locations in the background (40%), and creativity (10%).”

As someone who was born in North Jersey and has plenty of family living there, I don’t know how many iconic locations there are for quality selfie material in New Jersey. If you’re looking to win any of these prizes, New York City is probably your best bet.
