The four-man quarterbacking race at Arizona has ended and the youngest competitor has come out on top.

Coach Rich Rodriguez announced Monday that redshirt freshman Anu Solomon would start Friday night’s season opener against UNLV.

Solomon beat out USC transfer Jesse Scroggins, LSU transfer Jerrard Randall and Texas transfer Connor Brewer.

The decision didn’t come as much of a surprise as Solomon was getting the bulk of the reps with the first team this fall. Solomon emerged after Scroggins, who was ahead in the spring, was in a car accident and missed extensive time in the offseason.

Even though Solomon is the announced starter, Rodriguez said he might play more than one quarterback against UNLV.

If Solomon can hold on to the starting spot, he’ll be the first non-senior to start at quarterback during Rodriguez’s tenure at Arizona. Senior Matt Scott started in 2012 and senior B.J. Denker was the starter last season.

Solomon, who was a four-star recruit and second-best dual-threat quarterback in the nation in 2013, according to, went 57-3 as a four-year starter at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas. He threw for 10,112 yards and 138 touchdowns with just 17 interceptions.
