Big happenings at the Walmart on Skyland Blvd. in Birmingham last Friday. Close to the duct tape and super-cheap bottle of antifreeze, there was a $30,000 college football trophy.
The Coaches' Trophy - the crystal football given to the winner of the BCS Championship Game - is making a tour in Alabama after the Crimson Tide won it last Monday against Notre Dame. The people of Alabama were excited to see it, and rightfully so. It's not the Stanley Cup, but it's a pretty cool trophy. And with the picture you get the background of about a million 12 packs of Dr. Pepper (the sponsor of the trophy), which is always a bonus (h/t to Busted Coverage):
This is a tradition in Alabama (and practically an annual one at the rate Nick Saban is winning titles), as the trophy makes its rounds and people line up to take pictures with it. And do they ever line up. The first stop in Birmingham was the Walmart. When the trophy went to Academy Sports and Outdoors store in Birmingham on Saturday, Twitter user @Kayla_Snyder4 posted this picture from the store:
At this rate, the Walmart stores in Alabama might want to keep the Dr. Pepper background displays up. It sure seems there's a good chance a new trophy returns about this time next year.
