Winthrop's feel-good story advances to Big South semis on buzzer beater

Andre Smith didn't waste any time after seeing a short jumper from High Point sophomore Adam Weary fall through the basket with 6 seconds left in a Big South Conference quarterfinal game and his team trailing by one.

Smith took the inbound pass, raced up the sidelined, turned a complete 360 to avoid defenders and fired the game-winning 3-pointer from well behind the arc The fourth-seeded Eagles upset top-seed High Point 62-60 on Friday advancing to the semifinals and earning their 19th victory of the season.

Winthrop attracted national attention just a week ago for paying tribute to the victims of the Sandy Hook school shooting in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012 by wearing the names of victims on their jerseys in the regular season finale and hosting the family of one of the young victims with whom coach Pat Kelsey has developed a strong friendship.
