Villanova’s roller coaster regular season ends with a resume polishing victory

Those 12 losses on Villanova's record were looking pretty hideous Wednesday morning, but later in the evening the Wildcats had a gorgeous new victory to shine them up a bit.

After beating No. 5 Georgetown 67-57 to end the regular season, Villanova looks like an NCAA tournament team provided it doesn't fall on its face in the Big East tournament next week. And let's face it, the way this season has gone for the Wildcats, that's entirely within the realm of possibility.

The win over Georgetown was the third of the season over a top-5 team for Villanova. The previous two over Syracuse and Louisville were starting to fade into the rear view a bit and might have been downplayed or even dismissed if the Wildcats didn't add another to refresh everyone's memory.

As long as coach Jay Wright's team represents itself well in the conference tournament, it should have enough good on its side to earn an at-large bid.

This latest victory comes against a team the selection committee will likely be considering as a No. 1 seed. It also ended Georgetown's 11-game winning streak and prevented the Hoyas from celebrating a regular season Big East title Wednesday.

Regardless of whether they go dancing or they finish the season in the NIT, the Wildcats completed a turnaround season of which they can be proud. This was a team picked 12th in the preseason coaches poll after a 13-19 finish last season.

Sure, it's been a roller coaster ride at times, including the final week, which featured losses to Seton Hall and Pittsburgh in advance of the triumph over the Hoyas, but the Wildcats have been resilient.

They also have shown a knack for coming up big when the odds are against them and the pressure is on. That will make them a dangerous team beginning next week in the Big East tournament and likely the following week in the NCAA tournament.
