We have some bad news for those of you who thought March Madness would provide a nice respite from the never-ending Tim Tebow news cycle.
You thought wrong.
However improbably, the backup NFL quarterback/CFL prospect found himself climbing aboard the Wichita State basketball team's bus at Mid-Continent Airport in Wichita on Sunday. Tebow was then handed a microphone which he used to deliver an impromptu speech to the Shockers who are headed to the Sweet Sixteen after upsetting top-seeded Gonzaga in the West Region in Salt Lake City on Saturday.
So how did Tebow's path cross with one of the NCAA tournament's best stories so far?
Tebow’s plane had stopped in Wichita to refuel and Tebow grabbed the opportunity to step on-board the basketball team’s bus before the team headed back to the WSU campus to congratulate the Shockers:
“This you will remember for the rest of your lives,” Tebow told them. “You will never forget it, guys. These are the special times of your lives, regardless of what you do in the future. So, I just want to say congrats. You are an inspiration to so many people.”
Tebow, of course, is someone to be trusted when he talks about valuing and appreciating your college days as they happen. After all, he was a Heisman Trophy- and national championship-winning quarterback at Gainesville. While he experienced some success with the Denver Broncos, Tebow's NFL career has been laced with so much controversy and strife. You can see why a lot of NFL players describe the league as nothing more than a job while college days are more about playing for love of the game.
Hopefully Wichita State's players have already taken the time to look around and appreciate what they've done the past few days. But it's nice Tebow took the time to give them a reminder — and their story a moment they won't soon forget.
