Syracuse has a reputation for producing excellent broadcast journalists, so perhaps it should come as no surprise that Jonny Flynn felt comfortable conducting an interview with former college teammate Wesley Johnson.
As a reporter was about to ask Johnson a question about his NBA summer-league debut on Monday in Las Vegas, Flynn intervened, grabbed the camera and commandeered the interview.
"This wouldn't be right if I didn't interview my old teammate at Syracuse," a smiling Flynn said, "so I'm going to take over this camera now."
Although Flynn does poke some fun at Johnson by only conceding that his teammate is "kinda athletic," the remainder of the interview is surprisingly straightforward and professional. Flynn asks Johnson about the excitement of making his summer-league debut, how he expects to contribute as a rookie and of course, what message he has for his many fans back in Syracuse.
"What I brought to Syracuse in one year I'm bringing it to Minnesota," Johnson said. "I'm going to tell y'all to be ready."
Syracuse fans surely wish that Flynn would have stayed in school one more season so they could have seen him play alongside Johnson, but they will have a chance to see the duo in action at the Carrier Dome.
Flynn, Johnson and the rest of the Timberwolves will play the Detroit Pistons in an NBA preseason game at the Dome on Oct. 15.
