A new era at Creighton begins with an unfortunate gaffe

It has been a whirlwind 48 hours for Creighton basketball, and Bluejays athletic director Bruce Rasmussen apparently isn't immune to the stress.

After describing how he first met new coach Greg McDermott and listing his many accomplishments at Tuesday's introductory news conference, Rasmussen launched into his introduction of the former Iowa State coach. Addressing a room full of reporters and donors, he said, "I am very proud to introduce to you today, the 16th head men's basketball coach in the history of Creighton University, coach Doug McDermott."

Uh, Bruce, Doug McDermott is your new coach's son and a future Creighton player. The man you hired is Greg McDermott.

To their credit, the crowd applauded as if nothing happened and Greg McDermott diffused any remaining tension with a crisp one-liner. He stared out at the blue-shirted fans who once booed him when he coached at rival Northern Iowa earlier this decade and said, "I've never had any applause from anyone in this town before, so that's kind of nice."

It probably isn't a great omen for McDermott's Creighton tenure that his new boss got his name wrong, but at least he's in good company. At his introductory press conference at Florida International last spring, NBA hall of famer Isiah Thomas was introduced as Isiah Thompson. Ouch!
