Opposing teams traveling to San Jose State this season may be surprised to discover more Spartans than they expected on the Event Center floor.
There will be five Spartans players in basketball jerseys and five cartoonish Spartan warriors painted on the court.
San Jose State quietly revealed its new floor on its Facebook page on Saturday, drawing the usual mixed reviews from a smattering of commenters. To some, the court was bold and attention-grabbing. To others, it was tacky or a waste of money.
Any attention the court brings will be welcome for San Jose State, which has struggled to carve out a niche in the pro sports-dominated Bay Area market. The Spartans have never won an NCAA tournament game in program history and made the most recent of their three appearances back in 1996.
A fourth appearance isn't likely this March to say the least with the Spartans losing four graduating seniors and five other transfers this offseason from a team that went 9-20 in its final season in the WAC last year. Chris Cunningham and D.J. Brown will be the only two returners with meaningful Division I experience as San Jose State transitions into the Mountain West this season.
Given the step up in competition and the shorthanded roster, San Jose State coach Dave Wojcik probably wishes the five extra Spartans on the floor could catch, dribble or shoot as well.
