It's a tragedy whenever a team loses a key cog during the preseason, and that's exactly what happened to the Toronto Raptors prior to Wednesday's loss to the Timberwolves. The team's mascot, aptly named The Raptor, tore his Achilles and will miss the entire season. At least the mascot head prevented onlookers from seeing the look of pain and anguish on The Raptor's face.
While the morale of Raptors fans will certainly take a hit, the bigger issue may be finding a replacement. How many guys or girls are walking around downtown Toronto that could jump onto the floor of the Air Canada Centre and trampoline themselves into the air for a between the legs slam? In a plush costume nonetheless? It might be easier to find a starting point guard.
