It's been nearly five months since Leandro Barbosa took a false step against the Charlotte Bobcats, came up hobbling and had to be carried off the court by several of his Boston Celtics teammates. In the time since tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, Barbosa has been traded to the Washington Wizards, seen his contract expire and found himself facing an uncertain NBA future.
Still, despite entering free agency in the untenable position of coming off a major injury as he nears 31 years of age, the veteran guard has been working diligently to get back in game shape so that he can showcase his wares for prospective NBA suitors. And if you're not quite ready to get back on the court, there's really no better way to display your progress than with a training montage. I mean, if it's good enough for Rocky Balboa and Kenny Powers, it's surely good enough for "The Brazilian Blur," right?
The clip, put together and posted by Barbosa's brother Artur, depicts the former Phoenix Suns, Toronto Raptors, Indiana Pacers, Celtics and Wizards guard going through a variety of strength and conditioning exercises aimed at showing his improved lateral movement and leg strength following surgery to repair his torn ACL, which is great — we like Leandro and would love to see him get another NBA look, especially since he's reportedly on track to be ready to go come September — but also, y'know, sort of goofy. (To his credit, Barbosa clearly gets that, as evidenced by the Godfather of Soul-influenced coda.)
Here's hoping Barbosa's workout-video pitch to prospective NBA employers proves fruitful, if for no other reason than it would be fantastic to see more unsigned free agents follow suit. I, for one, would love nothing more than to watch an Andrew Bynum training montage; I'm betting it'd be short on exertion and long on flamenco, and that sounds like a pretty good way to spend a few minutes of my summer.
Hat-tip to TrueHoop's Henry Abbott.
