Last year's Goody's Fast Pain Relief 500 at Martinsville was one of the most wrenching races of the year, a race that Jeff Gordon absolutely owned and was within mere feet of winning. But you can't count your trophies till Miss Sprint Cup hands 'em to you, and in this case, the best on-track story of the day came well after the race had been scheduled to end.
Let's pick up the action with three laps remaining:
That race had the potential to end two huge winless streaks, those of Jeff Gordon and Matt Kenseth. But the drivers got into each other and, much like a couple kids fighting in the backseat, neither one won. Denny Hamlin sprinted away with the victory, the first of his eight in 2010. Gordon would go almost another year before winning; Kenseth still hasn't been to victory lane since the second race of the 2009 season.
Could there be some payback coming this weekend? Almost certainly. But with as much bumping and banging as goes on at Martinsville, drivers probably need to tape a checklist of grudge targets to their dashboard.
