Phoenix wastes no time digging up the old track

Well, that didn't take long. Literally minutes after the checkered flag flew, crews began the laborious process of digging up Phoenix International Raceway for the upcoming repave. Race winner Jeff Gordon even got the chance to pilot a backhoe for a couple scoops.

The track is undergoing a complete redesign because an engineering study determined that a simple repave would result in a single racing line. And since that's beyond death for a NASCAR race this year, engineers devised a new banked surface that will have at least two separate lines. Full details are right here.

And Gordon is surely the only backhoe operator who ever attended a post-Oscar party after getting off work. He planned to jet to Hollywood and hang with the elite. What, you weren't invited?
