Ten years ago, Dale Earnhardt won his final race at Talladega. This year, Jamie McMurray will be running a Bass Pro Shops Chevy painted in the style of the car Earnhardt ran in the 1998 All-Star race. (You can see that original ride up there on the left.)
That Talladega race, on Oct. 17, 2000, was the 76th and final win of Earnhardt's career. He started 20th, and got a final-lap push from Kenny Wallace to jump from 17th position to the lead on the final lap. It was his 10th Talladega win, and his third in his final four attempts. And even though the Intimidator is still fresh in everyone's mind, only 10 full-time active drivers today ran in that race.
"Dale Earnhardt is royalty in NASCAR, so to be able to drive under his name every week is rather humbling," McMurray said. He continued in press-release-speak: "He is part of the foundation that NASCAR was founded on and is part of the reason guys like me have been given a chance to do something we love and be able to make a living from it. Anything that we are able to do to honor his legacy seems only appropriate."
Naturally, Bass Pro Shops is selling diecasts of the new car right now for $60.
