Much of the conversation around this site of late has centered on just how obsessed the Matt Kenseth fans are. It's as if they compensate for their hero's quiet demeanor by being hardcore lunatics. And friends, the bar has just been raised.
This past weekend at Talladega, 17 Kenseth fans passed the ultimate test of fan loyalty: they got tattoos of their man. That's Kenseth in the middle of the picture in the yellow hat, looking a little bemused at the whole thing.
The tattoo deal was a promotion with Jeremiah Weed, the tasty alcoholic beverage, and participants could get a tattoo of Kenseth's autograph, the number 17 or a Jeremiah Weed "Lightning Lemonade" can. And, no joke, exactly 17 fans agreed to get a permanent tattoo. (The 17th fan was Kenseth's spotter Mike Calinoff, who captured his experience on video here.)
In gratitude for the tattooees' dedication, Jeremiah Weed donated $5,000 to the Air Force Enlisted Village charity, designed to help provide for indigent surviving spouses of Air Force personnel. And let's hope Kenseth stays in the 17 for a long, long time.
So, fans of other drivers: your move.
