Throughout the summer we're running our second NASCAR World Cup. Will Carl Edwards repeat? Or will someone else take the title? Click here for a NASCAR World Cup explanation and a list of all the groups.

Group G: Carl Edwards (7th in points, 1 win), Ryan Newman (11th, 0), Kasey Kahne (22nd, 0), David Gilliland (32nd, 0)

Michigan Matchups: Edwards vs. Newman, Kahne vs. Gilliland

Sonoma Matchups: Edwards vs. Gililand, Newman vs. Kahne

Kentucky Matchups: Edwards vs. Kahne, Newman vs. Gilliland

Will the road course be what determines the winners of this group? Newman is currently 11th in the points dtadings despite not finishing in the top five so far this season. The highest any driver has finished in the points standings in the past 10 years without recording a top five is 18th (Bobby Labonte in 2007). Newman won't remain an outlier for too much longer, but we're not sure if he'll get a top-five finish in the three group stage.

Newman's lack of top-end finishes leaves the door open for Kahne. Assuming Kahne can put together full races and get good finishes, of course. That's been the major knock on the No. 5 team all season, but this is one of the most favorable draws he could have gotten. If he can outrun Newman at Sonoma, he's got a great chance of moving on.

Projected standings: Edwards 2-1, Kahne 2-1, Newman 2-1, Gilliland 0-3
