Michigan Matchups: Kenseth vs. Logano, Stewart vs. Allgaier
Sonoma Matchups: Kenseth vs. Stewart, Logano vs. Allgaier
Kentucky Matchups: Kenseth vs. Allgaier, Logano vs. Stewart
It's close, but we think Group D is the toughest group and here's why. Kenseth has (obviously) been one of the best drivers in the Cup Series this season despite the lack of a win. Logano would be in Pot 1 if it wasn't for the issue he had on the final restart at Pocono on Sunday and the tracks and matchups line up really well for Tony Stewart to make a run. It could be possible to see this one come down to a couple of positions.
Here's why we like Stewart to advance. He's up against Allgaier at Michigan and he's been very good at the two-mile track, especially since the repave. Since 2010, he's only finished outside of the top 10 once and that was last June when he lost an engine. At Sonoma he draws Kenseth, who has one top-10 in 14 starts there, so Stewart should be 2-0 heading into Kentucky against Logano. This could be a situation where the deciding matchup in the group is between Logano and Kenseth at Michigan. And we'll give the slightest of edges to Logano.
Projected standings: Logano 3-0, Stewart 2-1, Kenseth 1-2, Allgaier 1-2
