Xtreme Couture's Tompkins fires back on Cope after hatchet job

Twitter, Facebook and Internet radio is not a vacuum. When will athletes learn this? Chad Johnson made the mistake when he Twittered that the day Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett died was as bad as 9/11. Johnson was embarrassed on the blogosphere and made an apology. Kit Cope is learning that same lesson this week with some silly comments he made last week on MMAJunkie radio. He ripped Xtreme Couture and his ex-girlfriend Gina Carano. Xtreme Couture trainer Shawn Tompkins was also a target. Cope said he brings little technical knowledge to the gym:

"I take that as a compliment. He can say what he wants," Tompkins says most his 28 fighters are in the top 10 in their weight class. "I got guys that'll fight him anyday, but he's not good enough to get into those organizations. Let alone be in the top 10."

Cope is an accomplish kickboxer/muay thai specialist but hasn't made a successful transition to mixed martial arts. Cope, who's been a television host on Spike and was featured in an MTV documentary, also talked a little trash about Carano and her chances against Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos (1:35 mark):

"I know Gina Carano very well. She's got one thing in mind and that's beating Cyborg," said Tompkins. "She's trained harder than she's ever trained. Everybody saw her at the press conference in New York, Everybody's commenting that she's got a brand new body. He hasn't seen her train in three years. What does he know?"

Tompkins says Cope is a publicity seeker:

"He's doing what he always does. He jumps in front of a video camera, he gets excited and he runs his mouth off."

Cope works as the muay thai instructor at Wanderlei Silva's gym in Las Vegas. Tompkins said when it was time for Silva to get some instruction from someone he turned to him and not the gym's instructor:

"He hasn't fought in years and I don't see him training anybody. I do remember this though, I was the one walking through the door where he's the muay thai coach and I was the one coaching the owner. Who's the better coach?

Tompkins also took issue with MMAJunkie radio for pushing the topic of Carano at all with Cope (5:00 mark). He closed by saying Cope saw him last week the UFC Fan Expo and was very quick to compliment him.
