It was back to the scene of the crime for Cage Writer. The Thursday before UFC 82 was a special day for the organization as it announced a partnership with its first huge mainstream sponsor, Budweiser. Even with the Bud people in attendance, we treated it as if it were any other fight press conference. Two questions got UFC folks fired up:
1. How significant was EliteXC getting the CBS deal? That partnership went down the same week.
2. Is fighter image/behavior a concern with these big sponsor signing on? Jon Koppenhaver's felony for choking someone in a street fight had just been reduced from a felony to a midemeanor?
The UFC returned home to Las Vegas and decided it was time to boot Cage Writer from the events. Eventually things were smoothed over and you've gotten all the coverage you have
loved hated tolerated since June on Yahoo! and mrsunshineshow.com. The issue hadn't come up publicly until Cage Writer got called out for being a troublemaker at yesterday's press conference so we decided to address the 2008 flap face-to-face.
White and Cage Writer talk journalism at UFC 96 presser (0:30 mark):
White also talk about his quandry of having to match up teammates, like Keith Jardine and Rashad Evans, in the cage at some point down the road.
We also tried some investigative work about the UFC 95 video where White and his "crew" were pulled over (2:50 mark) by Metro Police in Las Vegas for some heinous traffic violation. Why was the camera turned off?
